John Maddox (Williams) is an American rancher who meets Beatrice Clive (Louise Lovely), the daughter of a noble English family. He makes a fortune and leases her family's estate though a lawyer, with the provision that they remain in charge of it. Maddox and his sister, Polly (Audrey Chapman), come to visit Beatrice, and discover that she is engaged to Sir George Tranery (Frank Leigh). Tranery, however, is a rogue who has already betrayed Margaret Quentin (Bessie Eyton), one of the maids. Although Tranery has forced Margaret into silence, Maddox convinces her to tell Beatrice the truth. At the last moment, she backs down and Beatrice, believing that Maddox is lying, decides to elope with Tranery. Maddox stops her by taking her up to the haunted tower, where Margaret's father (Billie Elmer) is waiting. Quentin tells her the truth and Beatrice agrees to wed Maddox.
